August 1999 - India

hey there!!

was a longer time offline now, cause the gtc company in nepal increased the internet rate from 1 rs per minute to 5 (!) rs a minute just from one day to the other. well anyway, nepal hasnt got any nightlife, except the few bars, that close between 22 and 24 o clock ... i was expecting a little more. so if u arnt out for a trek in nepal, it still remains a goddamn big third world shopping centre, and its good in that hehe .... bought all my presents already and gave em with my friend robert, who has left kathmandu back to austria, cause of his work. so i am on my own now, and i realise, that it is fun. i mean, not that i didnt love travelling with robert, we came along pretty well, but everybody, who has travelled alone before, knows how it is. no discussions about what to do, where to go, where to meet up again ... u just do what u like, and u are alone responsible for all the troubles u re in or not, whatever.

yeah, so i left kathmandu at august 25th and went to pokhera, a really lovely place to stay .... if it wouldnt rain all day long ... i met an
american guy with whom i staye there for a couple of days, we rented
motorbikes and explored the countryside ... that was fun. we nearly
came along to see the himalaya, but the other day we planed to go up
sarangotha, was cloudy again .... so i only saw the biggest one of the
annapurna range. anyway, he is still there and i hope he is taking a
lot of pictures and will send them to me afterwrds ( do u hear me steve!! i wanna see the himalaya !!).

in the end i ended up again on a horrible bustrip down to the indian
border ... yeah, im getting used to it .. but that was so fucking scary
... there have been a lot of landslides, cause of the monsoon, so the
road was partly closed, but that didnt matter the busdriver at all. so
i woke up around 5 am in the morning looking out of the window and
realised, that we were standing in the middle of a goddamn waterfall,
no street at all .... shit, i just got on the floor of the bus and tried to fall asleep again ... the people next to me started already praying ... an atmosphere i really dont recommend you ... but i finally i got alive to varanasi, where i will stay for a couple of days. today i stood up at 6 am and did a boat trip on the river ganges ... spectacular ... the sunrise, the ghats, all the temples in this special morning light .... yeah it was a good decision to get up so early. i also went to one of these cremations at the riverside and that was a totally new experience for me ... i mean, they put the ashes into the river and about 50 metres downstream other people are taking their daily bath ... weird weird weird hehe.

anyway, after varanasi ill head on to khj?? anything, one of the 4 holy
places of india, south of varanasi, and then up to agra.

ok thats all folks, i hope u re not kind of diassapointed to stand on
such a long travellist, but thats the only way i can keep up contact
with most of u.

so take care
mucki

to jo .... just tell me,where u re in india and about your plans, maybe
we run into each other again ... would be fun.

islands ... sounded like u had a good time again. hope your infection
is alright again ..

meet each other, so stay in touch.
